New Name - Same MD
Northern Flags MD Iain Clasper became hyphenated on June 1st when he married his French partner Fabienne. Iain’s married name is now Iain Clasper-Cotte and as a sign of marriage equality Fabienne recognised that flags help pay the mortgage so she reached for a flag in the photo-booth at the wedding and managed to put aside her rampant French nationalism and ignore the French flag and, as it was the Jubilee weekend she looked rather fetching in a Union flag. |
Yorkshire Evening Post - Is the Jubilee good news for the economy?
‘Things are rather frantic’ Ian Clasper is managing director at Beeston-based Northern Flags, which has seen sales of union jacks soar over the last few weeks. “Things are rather frantic at the moment – it’s been a very busy time for us. “We are fielding 15 times the number of enquiries we usually do at this time of year and have produced tens of thousands of union jacks over the last month, which is something we just wouldn’t normally see. “Normally we make flags for petrol stations, hotels and car dealerships but that balance has changed as people have got into the jubilee spirit and also with the Olympics coming up. “We tend to make the large scale, heavier fabric flags rather than the plastic and polyester ones you see in the supermarkets and other shops but the demand has still been enormous. “Everyone seems to want to fly a flag at the moment, whether it’s outside a pub or hotel, council offices or a car showroom. “I think the sun has helped a bit as well to be honest because when you get blue skies everyone suddenly pictures a flag fluttering outside their premises.” Taken from the Yorkshire Evening Post 31.05.12 |

BBC Radio Leeds turns to Northern Flags as the trusted authority on all things flags
Adding to two previous radio appearances this year which have included BBC Radio Cumbria. Northern Flags known for our many years experience in providing a vast range of flags, from nationals, custom and feather flags was sought out by BBC Radio Leeds reporter Richard Edwards. Richard interviewed our Operations Director Jayne Brogie live on Tuesday 29th May’s Martin Kelner & Kathering Hannah breakfast show on the recent wave of patriotism running up to the Jubilee, Euro 2012 and the Olympic games. Jayne commented that we have seen an uptake in the orders for Jubilee related products such as bunting and Union Flags. Richard asked how the listeners could avoid flying their union flags upside down and under what circumstances does the Union flag become a Union Jack. Jayne confirmed that the Union flag when installed correctly has the broader white stripe at the top left hand corner and that flying it upside down is a distress signal. When the Union flag is flown at sea it is then known as the Union Jack, on land its correct term is the Union flag. You can listen again to Jayne’s interview at the link below: |

Developed in conjunction with one of the UK’s major Print Management Companies for their automotive clients the new Pop Out range is designed to deliver a high quality, low cost, portable branding solution with a high impact. Union flags return on Regent Street to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 2012
Popular with Londoners, UK and international visitors alike, the flags are a fitting and patriotic tribute to one of London’s most iconic shopping streets – and to British Culture – in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The gigantic flags were hugely popular when first displayed to celebrate the Royal Wedding of William and Katherine in 2011. Commencing at the BBC building, north of Oxford Circus, a sky of 140 flags suspended from 28 crossings will lead to Piccadilly Circus before continuing down Regent Street in the south. Each flag measures 4 x 2.5 metres in size and will create a striking backdrop to one of the world’s most famous historical shopping thoroughfares. Heddon Street and Swallow Street, Regent Street Food Quarters, will also have Union flag bunting in the street. |

Bunting is best of British
Bunting will be bountiful at the National Trust’s Wallington house this summer as it goes for an unofficial record. The Cambo estate will be flying the flags for a series of patriotic events in a celebration of the Best of British. To make sure the festivities are up to standard, the National Trust, which runs the estate, is planning to create the world’s longest string of bunting. Visitor Experience Manager Gillian Mason said: “The summer of 2012 is likely to be remembered as one of national pride as we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and a number of sporting activities” “At Wallington we wanted to do something celebratory that everyone could join in with and came up with the idea of the longest line of bunting ever.” The current Guinness record is held by the Fairtrade Foundation in London, which made a line of bunting 3,427.94m long last May. To make around 3,440 metres, it will take more than 17,200 individual flags. So far, 2,000 have been sent out to local schools, community groups and supporters, and visitors have already started a line. Each flag should celebrate the British theme, with designs to date featuring the Queen and her corgis, a double-decker bus, bowler hats, umbrellas, rain clouds, red squirrels and cream teas. People can make their own contribution by visiting Wallington, or logging onto its website to download a template. And while Wallington is not going for the official world record due to the costs involved, it is hoping to make its string even longer, with the help of staff and volunteers. On Monday, June 4 the bunting will be draped around the Wallington central courtyard. For more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wallington or call 01670 773600. |

Little Havana’s street festival sets Guiness world record for largest flag
The Calle Ocho Street Festival, the largest celebration of its kind in the United States, broke its fifth Guinness world record Sunday with a multicolour flag of 250 feet long and 36 feet wide composed of 422 flags from around the world. More than 100 volunteers carried the flag, folded in the form of a number 1, as a symbol of unity during the Miami festival. Later, they lifted it high for 276 seconds to represent what they said was the number of countries on Earth. Representatives from Guinness World Records who came to Miami to witness the occasion certified that it was the largest-ever image created by flags, said Lino Fernández, former president of the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, which hosts the event. It was an extraordinary recognition to celebrate the 35th edition of the festival, a Miami tradition that started as an effort by a group of Cuban young adults to make their culture known to the wider American society. The flag, called “One World” and sewn two weeks ago, was displayed at 2:15 p.m. on Southwest Eighth Street between 24th and 25th avenues. To lift it, 63 poles 10 feet high were used for its perimeter and 25 inside to support it. “The logistics were very complicated,” said Fernández. “It’s a very heavy flag. You have to take into account the wind and the river of people walking on Calle Ocho.” |

Dorking child wins Olympic flag design competiton
A CREATIVE ten-year-old will have her flag design handed out to 6,000 residents during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay after winning a competition. Heidi de la Hoyde, of Moore's Road, Dorking, beat 542 other entries from primary school children across Mole Valley to win the prize. Heidi's design will now be printed by Mole Valley District Council and handed out for people to wave while watching the torch being carried through Dorking and Westcott on July 20. "I am so happy and excited," she said. "When I found out about the competition I wasn't sure about what to draw, so I tried to think about things that were going on in the local area. "I thought of the Olympic bike race, which is a big thing for Mole Valley, so I decided to draw a bike and on the wheels I put British flags because I wanted to represent my area." Heidi, who attends St Paul's Primary School, only found out she had won the contest after her head teacher revealed the surprise at an assembly last Thursday. "I walked in and all the teachers and the whole school were clapping," she said. "I was really embarrassed but happy at the same time." Heidi's design was chosen from a shortlist of six entries by Junior Youth Voice, which comprises young councillors aged 9 to 11 who represent primary schools across Mole Valley. |

British Armed Forces to be Flagbearers at London Olympics
British servicemen and women will carry the national flags at the team welcome and medals ceremonies at this year's Olympic Games. Members of the Royal Navy, Army and Air Force will act as flagbearers at the 100 team welcome ceremonies in the days leading up to the July 27 start of the Games and at the 805 victory ceremonies during the Olympics and Paralympics. "The flag-raising duties at Olympic and Paralympic Games are seen as an honour but we are in fact honoured to have these inspirational men and women be part of London 2012," Games chief Sebastian Coe said. One of the 176 service personnel selected, Squadron Leader Lee Cobley, has family links to the Olympics with his father Don competing twice in modern pentathlon. "My father represented Britain at the Melbourne and Rome Games so they hold a special fascination for me," Cobley said. |

Guiness World Record - The Longest Line of Bunting
Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust need you and your bunting! We want to inspire members of the public, service users, carers and staff to set a goal that makes a positive difference to your health and your life. As part of our campaign we would love you to take part in a shared attempt to break the current Guinness World Record for the longest line of bunting. We’d like you to be involved with making the pieces of bunting; there is no limit for the amount of bunting you can make, whether it’s one piece of 99 pieces. As our campaign is inspired by the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic games we encourage participants to set a personal goal and then represent that goal on a pre-cut bunting triangle using fabric pens and other items that can be sewn on to the fabric. We have estimated that to make 2.5miles of bunting we would have approximately 12,500 individual triangle pieces of bunting attached side by side. We are confident that we will be able to achieve more that 2.5miles length of bunting line, with each piece of bunting being completely unique to an individual and/or their goal.
