A CREATIVE ten-year-old will have her flag design handed out to 6,000 residents during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay after winning a competition. Heidi de la Hoyde, of Moore's Road, Dorking, beat 542 other entries from primary school children across Mole Valley to win the prize. Heidi's design will now be printed by Mole Valley District Council and handed out for people to wave while watching the torch being carried through Dorking and Westcott on July 20. "I am so happy and excited," she said. "When I found out about the competition I wasn't sure about what to draw, so I tried to think about things that were going on in the local area. "I thought of the Olympic bike race, which is a big thing for Mole Valley, so I decided to draw a bike and on the wheels I put British flags because I wanted to represent my area." Heidi, who attends St Paul's Primary School, only found out she had won the contest after her head teacher revealed the surprise at an assembly last Thursday. "I walked in and all the teachers and the whole school were clapping," she said. "I was really embarrassed but happy at the same time." Heidi's design was chosen from a shortlist of six entries by Junior Youth Voice, which comprises young councillors aged 9 to 11 who represent primary schools across Mole Valley. |
