WHY SHOULD YOU BUY RECYCLED FLAG MATERIAL LIKE ENVIROFLAG™?

Eco Friendly Flag Materials

When you are looking for eco friendly flags, it is quite possible you just type the search terms into Google without thinking about the process behind it. Sourcing environmentally responsible products is very popular right now but why should you choose a product like EnviroFlag™ instead of one of the traditional alternatives?

What fabric are flags made of?

Over the centuries, flags have been made out of a range of materials such as wool, cotton and silk. With the advent of synthetic fibres, flag manufacturing moved more towards nylon and polyester. Polyester is most likely the flag material you’ll most commonly find on the UK marketplace. Whether it be knitted polyester, woven polyester or a blockout version. But are you aware of the impact polyester flag production has on the environment?

The impact of your flag material

The making of polyester actually uses less water and creates less waste water than the production of natural fibres but its energy consumption makes it a high impact process. Each kilo of polyester produced emits 14.2kg of CO2. Processes have been fine tuned down the years to make improvements to this, but a major issue is that less than 1% of polyester products are actually created from recycled textiles.

Closing the loop

Rather than using virgin polyester, green flag materials such as EnviroFlag™ are made from recycled plastic bottles, meaning that less energy is required and fewer greenhouse gases are emitted during manufacturing. Not only this but more rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) is used to create the flag material, helping to make sure we’re still working towards a closed loop production process.

For each square metre of EnviroFlag™ produced, we use 10-12 plastic bottles, so by making sure you choose an eco friendly flag material, you are doing your part in closing the loop!
